Humalog (insulin lispro) is a mealtime prescription insulin that treats patients with type 1 or type 2 diabetes. It is classified as a rapid-acting insulin, as it begins working within 15 minutes of injection (as opposed to the normal 30). Humalog is most often used in combination with a longer-lasting insulin to help maintain blood sugar in between meals, as the liver is always putting out some glucose. Humalog is manufactured and owned by Eli Lilly and Company, and was approved for use by the Food and Drug Administration in 1996. One cannot currently buy Humalog in a generic version.
Humalog Varieties
Humalog is offered in three varieties. The first contains only Humalog (insulin lispro). The second variety is Humalog Mix 75/25, which contains 75% intermediate-acting insulin lispro protamine and 25% fast-acting insulin lispro. The third variety available is Humalog Mix 50/50, which contains 50% intermediate-acting insulin lispro protamine and 25% fast-acting insulin lispro. Many patients prefer the Humalog Mixes because they provide the ability to administer fewer injections throughout the day while still maintaining blood sugar levels between meals. Your doctor will know which variety is right for you. Patients can buy Humalog at any major pharmacy.
For patients that already use an insulin pump, Humalog can be prescribed and bought in a vial. For patients that do not use a pump, Humalog can be purchased in cartridges to be used in an injection pen. Patients that do not have their own injection pen can buy Humalog with its own exclusive pen called the KwikPen.
It is important to talk to your doctor about Humalog dosing and use. Do not stop taking Humalog without talking to your doctor.
Humalog Side Effects
As with any medication, Humalog may have some side effects. These include (but are not limited to) hypoglycemia, a skin reaction at the site of injection, and/or the thickening or pitting of skin at the site of injection. Allergic reaction is also possible. Talk to your doctor if you are experiencing any side effects.
